Most early settlers in Kentucky came from Virginia, Maryland, and the Carolinas.
Many came through the Cumberland Gap with Daniel Boone. Thomas Phelps II, one of our ancestors, was with Daniel Boone
at Fort Boonesborough. His name, along with some of his children, is on a monument at this site. The family records
are primarily in Hart, Larue, Hardin, and Jefferson counties. Research leads back to Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas,
and New York. Many of the people buried in the Barren Run Cemetery are related to us or related to people who married
into our line.
The history of Christopher Tharp and Sallie Hornback centers in the Hodgenville
and Barren Run area. They both, as you know, are buried in the Barren Run Cemetery. Much of their lives was involved
in the church and school there also.
I have traced the Tharp line to Hart county. Unfortunately, the county
court house burned destorying many needed records. At this time, I need other avenues of research. The Hornback
line goes back to the 1200's. Our Hornbacks are unfortunately considered unconnected lines so we can trace only to the
early 1800's. The Phelps go back to the 1700's. The Harkness line comes from New York. Our Kentucky ancestors
were true early American pioneers. They make me very proud.
At the reunion I plan to display in more detail, the information I have
found. Also copies will be available.
